Another day, another high street shop closing down. Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed it will close another 164 branches between 2024 and 2025.
The group, which has more than 27 million customers, confirmed the wave of closures will also affect Halifax and Bank of Scotland.
The upcoming closures are in addition to the 133 branches which have already closed in 2024.
Well over 6,000 banks have closed their doors for good in the past nine years, leaving some rural communities increasingly cut off from cash services.
Banks are expected to keep closing branches in the coming years as fewer people swing by them and more turn to online and mobile banking.
Lloyds says that just 8% of customers visit high street branches to manage their money, while 21million people use online or mobile banking.
Yet Britons often see banks as community hubs, with seven in 10 worried about the rate of bank closures, consumer champion Which? found.

Cash remains the second most frequently used way for people to pay for things, the banking trade association UK Finance says.
Branch banking allows consumers to withdraw, deposit cash and access face-to-face services, something campaigners say is vital for people with disabilities, older people and those living in rural areas where phone signal and internet connections may be spotty at best.

Its not about halting closures altogether, but ensuring that essential banking services remain accessible to those who still rely on them. It is crucial that the government prioritises opening more hubs quickly so that people aren’t left behind.
