Set in the 90s, the series covers their relationship as well as Delias nearly fatal attack and also her shocking discovery of her former boyfriends crimes.
The series will mirror real life events including when in 1994, three years into their relationship, Delia became alarmed after finding rope, tape and gloves under the bed they shared.
Sweeney held her captive for four days, repeatedly raping her before attempting to kill her with a wooden axe.
Delia lived to tell the tale and see her former partner put behind bars for the attempt on her life and for the double murder of two of his ex-girlfriends.
The new series will play out the horrifying crimes in a four part drama on ITV starting Sunday November 3.
The new ITV drama is Evans first role since Endeavour was axed, and sees him star opposite Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin.
Evans other acting credits include Vigil, The Take, Whitechapel and The Scandalous Lady W.
Endeavour saw Evans star as he young DS Endeavour Morse until the crime detective series ended after nine seasons.
Speaking to Woman&Home, Evans explained why the show had come to a natural end: You can’t please all of the people all of the time.
What we wanted to do was to end Endeavour in a way that was fitting to all of the enormous work we had put into it over the last 10 years and also to all of the huge support we have had every year from the audience.
Now taking up a very different role as serial killer John Sweeney, Evans has seen him on the other side of the law as he gets to grips with the dark side of the infamous killer.
The new ITV drama series also includes Downton Abbeys Kevin Doyle and Finding Alices Amanda Wilkin.
Until I Kill You starts Sunday November 3 at 9pm on ITV.
